The state has released applications for cannabis companies that would like to take part in the much-celebrated medical cannabis research programs in Pennsylvania.

A license to grow marijuana and a permit to run 6 retail dispensaries will be granted to every winner. Every applicant is required to have an already existing agreement with 1 out of 8 state-authorized health systems.

Applications should be submitted before 11th April.

The state rejected each application in the previous round citing various technical issues. However, many people consider the applications as just a formality. Some months ago, five medical centers are said to have had agreements with cannabis companies within the Philadelphia region.

According to reports from the state officials, Curaleaf has been paired with the University of Pennsylvania and Acreage with Drexel University. Besides, the Main Line Investment Partners (also known as Solterra) has been paired with Jefferson Health; Laurel Harvest Labs with Temple University and Cansortium with Philadelphia Osteopathic Medicine.

Creation of the research program was aimed at gaining reinforcement from the Republican representatives who recommended further research to be done prior to the passing of the medical cannabis law in the state.

Research studies will be designed by health systems for cannabis firms. The federal law prohibits cannabis in any form. Therefore, no researcher will be allowed to handle cannabis products or the plant itself. Handling marijuana will mess with the flow of finance from Medicaid and Medicare as well as federal grants. This implies that patients are bound to be self- reporting data making the consideration of any research by orthodox peer-evaluated scientific journals unlikely.

In conclusion, every company will be required to take patient data and share it with the research team of the health system. Any expenses for the research will be paid by the companies.  Many profit-oriented cannabis companies, which are currently operating in Pennsylvania, affirm that they are sharing patient personal details with research institutions.
