If you’ve ever browsed the strain selection at your local cannabis dispensary, chances are you’ve come across a kush strain or two. What is a ‘kush’ strain? Here’s a quick breakdown to help you better understand kush strains and what they’re all about.
What Are Kush Strains
With so many different cannabis strains out there, it streamlines our understanding of a strain’s effects if we classify them. Grouping strains together by their effects into categories such as sativa, indica, and hybrid is the main way cannabis enthusiasts differentiate, but we can go even deeper than that.
We can also classify them by their genetic lineage as well, by “family” to borrow a scientific term, if you will. For example, you may see many different strains that have ‘haze’ or ‘diesel’ in their name. The strains in these families have some similar overlap regarding their effects and physical characteristics.
Another example of a genetic family of cannabis is kush strains. Kush is a specific variety of cannabis whose genes can be traced back to the landrace strains that grow naturally in the Hindu Kush mountain range near the borders of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Just like with haze or diesel strains, these strains are prized for their consistent and distinct characteristics which set them apart from most other cannabis strains.
How many kush strains are there? It’s hard to say since new kush strains are being bred the world over, but you’re likely to find at least a few Kush descendants every time you visit your local dispensary.
The Characteristics of Kush Strains
Kush, by definition, is an indica-dominant strain known for its potent physical effects that can be relaxing, sedating, and euphoric all at the same time. You can typically expect a strong body high accompanied by a stoney and spaced out head high. Generally, these strains also have an earthy and grassy aroma and a very distinct, herbal flavor. When it comes to appearance, kush buds are typically very dense and thick, with a deep green color that may also feature some purple.
Identifying the classic kush signs gets easier with practice! Observe your senses. All kush strains feature these characteristics—effect, scent, and visual—but just how much will depend on the predominance of kush genetics in a particular cross strain. For example, hybrid strains that are made by crossing another strain with a kush strain may have less pronounced kush characteristics, while a pure kush strain like Afghan Kush or Hindu Kush will exemplify the kush family.
